Ladies & Gentlemen,
Voor de 9° maal heeft de opstelwedstrijd, gepatroneerd
door de Last Post Association , plaats gehad . Het is ons
een groot genoegen dat de prijs-uitreiking op deze academische
zitting mag gebeuren, waarvoor we het stadsbestuur van Ieper
bedanken.Ongetwijfeld onderlijnt dit ook de waarde van deze
wedstrijd en is het een pluspunt voor de primussen.
De eerste edities vonden plaats op initiatief van Vice-Voorzitter
Alfred Caenepeel in 1977, tot aan zijn afsterven. Na een
onderbreking hernomen in 1996 onder het impuls en de sponsorring
van Henri Vanden Berghe en de Familie Calvert, waarvan wij
het overlijden van Mevr. Calvert dit jaar betreuren. Sinds
2002 wordt de wedstrijd, niet alleen gepatroneerd, maar
ook door de Last
Post Association beheerd en georganiseerd.
May I , on behalf of the Last Post Association, express
our gratitude to all those who have been willing to sponsor
this essay competition. This contest aims to invite the
youngsters of our schools to think and express their feelings
and understanding on a subject in relation with our common
history and the Last Post.
The subject this year was ' FOR HONOUR, JISTICE, TRUTH
AND RIGHT '
"VOOR EER EN ECHTHEID, RECHTVAARDIGHEID EN RECHT"
In fact, this subject covers the aim of the essay competition,
and the participation of all allied nations involved. As
different pupils participate every year, the subject may
be a permanent one for the future.
May I take the opportunity in particular, once again ,
to express our great gratitude to Mrs Calvert, who sadly
past away this year. Her son Dave and the family who's involvement
and support are behind this initiative to honor WW1 Veteran
Donald Hodge, who was such a great friend to our Town and
our Association. And also our thanks goes to the Embassies
of the Commonwealth who helps us with their great generosity.
Onze zeer hartelijke dankbetuiging voor deelname in het
sponsorren van deze wedstrijd gaat natuurlijk ook naar het
Provinciebestuur , het Ieperse Stadsbestuur en naar Jaycees,
Rotaract , Rotary club, Round Table, Lions, Inner Wheel,
en de Kiwanis , die daardoor hun interesse voor de stedelijke
jeugd en voor onze werking in de verf zetten , alsook uiteraard
aan verschillende bedrijven die ons hierbij hebben geholpen.
Mag ik hier dan ook van de gelegenheid gebruik maken om
de directies en lesgevers van onze scholen zeer hartelijk
te danken voor hun onontbeerlijke medewerking .
En nu het oordeel , de resultaten afroeping waarop ongetwijfeld
wordt gewacht !
Per school werden de beste inzendingen beloond, volgens
het aantal deelnemers.
The presentation of the price for the best school essay
over all given by the HODGE-fund and family. We have the
pleasure to have Mr Dave CALVERT with us, he is the grandson
of Donald Hodge, World WarI veteran The winner of this year's
prize is: YASMINE GALLOUCH from Technisch Instituut Immaculata.
Voor deze school zijn Kim Minnekeer tweede, en Steve Broutin
derde.

Mr GREY - Ambassador of Australia is giving the prizes
for Hannelien Del'haye (1st) and Adriaan Vanderstichele
(2nd) of Lyceum O.L.V. Ter Nieuwe Plant:
The Ambassador of India - Mr ABHYANKAR is handing over
the prizes for the Sint Vincentiuscollege, Katrien Ingelbeen
(1st) Elke Couchez (2nd) and Charlotte Duthoo (3rd)
May I ask Mr Payton, Chargé d'Affaires of the New-Zealand
Embassy to present the prices for Koninklijk Technisch Atheneum
:Renaat Verdru (1st) en Melissa Maricou (2nd)
Mr RIOPEL - Councillor of the Canadian Embassy is giving
the prices for the Koninklijk Atheneum with Rutger Vandenberghe
(1st) Pieter Vervisch (2nd) and Roeland Vanbeselare (3rd).
Uit het ROTARY-KEITH fonds , beheerd door Rotary Ieper,
die we hiervoor hartelijk danken, wordt de 1e prijs geschonken
voor het beste essay in het Engels. Paul Vandeputte incomming
president of Rotary club Ieper will give this price to Sharon
Wackenier from Koninklijk Atheneum.
Mr Gruwez - Chairman of the Last Post Association is giving
the second English prize to Alexander Declercq from St Vincentius
College.
Ook Yves Leterme mocht een prijs uitdelen.
