Op zaterdag 4 augustus, exact 90 jaar na zijn overlijden
op 4 augustus 1917, vond in Vlamertinge een herdenking plaats
voor Noel
Chavasse. Hij is de enige persoon die een tweede Victoria
Cross (VC and bar) ontving tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog.
Hieronder een aantal foto's van deze mooie herdenking.
On Saturday, August, 4th, 2007, exactly 90 years after his
death on Augsust, 4th, 1917, a short ceremony took place at
Vlamertinge for Noel
Chavasse, the only person who received a second VC during
the Great War. Please find below some pictures of this remembrance.
Verzamelen aan het monument
van Noel Chavasse aan de kerk op de wijk Brandhoek.
Gathering at the monument
for Noel Chavasse near the church at Brandhoek (part of Vlamertinge).
After the laying of a wreath, people planted remembrance
crosses at the foot of the monument.
Afterwards the ceremony continued at Brandhoek
New Military Cemetery. Major Ian Ridley (Liverpool Scottisch
Colect) was master of ceremony.
Several members of the Chavasse family attended the event.
Tribute by Colonel David Morris, representative Colonel Commandant
of the RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corps). Followed by the Last
Post by Antoine Verschoot (at the left) and Albert Verkouter,
buglers of the Last Post
Association.
Lament by Pipe Major Henk Vandaele (Flemisch Pipe Band).
Wreath-laying by members of the family, the city of Ieper
and other people.
The Reveille.
At the left, the grave of Private C.A. Rudd 356629 1/10th
Bn., King's (Liverpool Regiment). He was Captain Chavasse's
soldier-servant and is also buried at this cemetery. He was
mortually wounded in the same action, possibly at the same
time, as Captain Chavasse. His grave is in Block VI, Row B,
No. 11.
Ivan Sinnaeve, alias 'Shrapnel Charlie', made a special gift
for the Chavasse family who was very pleased with it.
