| Tank Memorial Inauguration
Service - Poelkapelle - 10/10/2009 Op zaterdag 10 oktober vond in Poelkapelle
de inhuldiging plaats van het Ypres Salient Tank Memorial dat de inzet van tanks
tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog wil herdenken. Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog stond
in Poelkapelle lange tijd een tank nabij café De Zwaan. Pas in 1941 werd
deze tank door de Duitsers weggehaald.

de toespraak van de burgemeester: "Dames en heren,
Geachte vertegenwoordigers
van de burgerlijke en militaire overheden,
Inwoners van Langemark-Poelkapelle,
Geachte genodigden, Met de onthulling van een monument ter nagedachtenis
van de inzet van het Britse Tankkorps in 1917 wordt een stukje geschiedenis van
Poelkapelle terug onder de aandacht gebracht. Dit dorp kon als een van de
eersten in de Ieperse salient kennismaken met deze toen indrukwekkende oorlogsmachine.
De restanten van een van die tanks is hier als monument tot de tweede wereldoorlog
blijven staan en deed niet alleen dienst als publiekstrekker van de eerste generatie
fronttoeristen, maar evenzeer als speelobject van de lokale jeugd.
Bij velen
is die herinnering aan die tank blijven hangen en resulteert o.a. in de plaatsing
van het nieuwe monument dat vandaag onthuld wordt. Ladies and gentlemen,
representatives of civilian and military authorities,
representatives of
several veteran associations,

this tank memorial, a piece of the history in Poelkapelle is brought under attention.
This village was one of the first in the Ypres Salient to meet this new and impressive
war machine. The wreck of one of these tanks have been exposed here unitil World
War 2. It was an eye catcher for the first generation visitors but was also an
exciting play yard for the youth of Poelkapelle. The memory of this tank has been
kept in the mind of several citizens. That memory was an extra impulse to construct
this monument. This monument and all other W.W.1-monuments in Langemark-Poelkapelle
and the The Ypres salient are permanent witnesses of a terrible period in Western
History. They bring the consequences of war, the pointless loss of thousands
of young people, under public attention. The sacrifices a hole generation of young
people who gave their lives for things they believed in, should never be forgotten!
It's very important that, after all these years, war victims are permanently remembered.
It is our duty as community, laying in the Ypres Salient, to support these efforts. However,
only remembering this is not enough. Peace keeping is a permanent assignment,
a mission.
Convincing people to find peaceful solutions in conflicts is still
the best way to ensure that the sacrifices of the past wasn't useless. I
sincerely hope that this monument will pay his contribution to that ideal. Dit
monument is, net als alle andere wereldoorlog 1-monument in Langemark-Poelkapelle
en de Westhoek, een permanente getuige van een verschrikkelijke periode in onze
Westerse geschiedenis. Zij brengt de gevolgen van een oorlog, het verlies
van duizenden jonge mensen onder de publieke aandacht. Het offer dat zoveel jongeren,
bijna honderd jaar geleden hebben, mag niet vergeten worden. Het is de permanente
taak van het bestuur van een fontgemeente om die herinnering levendig te houden. Herinneren
alleen is echter niet genoeg… een vredesboodschap uitdragen houdt meer in
dan dat. Mensen overtuigen om vredelievende oplossingen te vinden in conflicten
is nog steeds de beste manier om de offers uit het verleden niet zinloos te maken.
Ik hoop dat dit nieuw monument daartoe een bijdrage levert. Dank
u."
