New painting / Nieuw schilderij - Mesen - 08/06/2007
Op donderdag 7 juni herdacht Nieuw-Zeeland de 90e verjaardag
van de slag om Mesen in 1917. Om 10.00 uur vond een plechtigheid
plaats op Messines
Ridge British Cemetery. Nadien werd opgestapt naar de
Sint-Niklaaskerk voor de onthulling van een herdenkingsplaat
ter ere van Lance Corporal Samuel Frickleton die voor zijn
acties en moed te Mesen een Victoria Cross kreeg. Nadien bezocht
het gezelschap de tentoonstelling
rond de Nieuw-Zeelanders in de oude brandweerkazerne.
In de namiddag werd een parade gehouden
naar het Ierse Vredespark. Na de parade vond de onthulling
plaats van een nieuw schilderij in de Vredesschool te Mesen.
Het schilderij stelt de gewonde, katholieke soldaat William
Redmond voor die geholpen wordt door de protestantse soldaat
Meekes. Familieleden van beide soldaten waren aanwezig.

aniversary of the Battle of Messines 1917. On Thursday, June
7th, a ceremony took place at Messines
Ridge British Cemetery. Immediately following the completion
of the ceremony at Messines Ridge British Cemetery, a plaque,
commemorating the winning of the Victoria Cross during the
Battle of Messines by Lance Corporal Samuel Frickleton of
the New Zealand Rifle Brigade was unveiled. Afterwards, the
group visited the New
Zealand exhibition at the town hall.
In the afternoon, a parade
was held towards the Island of Ireland Peace Park. After this
parade, the unveiling of a new painting in the Peace School
took place. The painting represents the catholic soldier Wiliam
Redmond who is helped by the protestant soldier Meekes. Family
members of the two soldiers were present at Messines.
